This summer, our lives were taken over by a few people: Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah from The Summer I Turned Pretty. We cried, laughed, and yelled at our screens as the love triangle we’ve been invested in for three seasons concluded. Now, we’ll explore opinions from members of Team Jeremiah and Team Conrad, and talk about an upcoming movie following the closing of the show.
Point
Jeremiah has it all: looks, patience, and charisma. Conrad, on the other hand, has nothing. He’s treated Belly badly and caused mayhem three summers in a row. In season one, while Jeremiah was just living the sweet life on Cousins Beach, Conrad was busy ruining Belly’s life. He was the reason Belly got hit in the face at a beach party in the pilot episode, and he didn’t give Belly anything for her birthday when everyone else did. Not to mention, the two were fighting all summer long; some people’s “beloved Conny-baby” was leaving Belly sad and hurt the entire first season. Throughout season one, Conrad went back and forth on his decision of taking Belly to the debutante ball and hid Susannah’s cancer from his brother.
However, this all seems less significant compared to everything else he’d done. For Season 2, let’s cut to the chase. Conrad goes missing, which by itself is disrespectful to Belly and Jere. However, who had enough bravery to search for him with Belly after all Conrad had done to him? Jere, that’s who. Also, while Conrad was in full hiding mode, he left Jere to care for their dying mother alone. That’s a little harsh, no? Let’s just say that Belly picking Jere at the end of the season was no surprise.
Season 3, however, is where things take a turn for the worse for Team Jere. Just as Belly was supposed to marry Jere, her true love, Conrad butted in like always and confessed his love, making any reasonable fan wonder why anyone with a brain would do such a thing so close to their wedding. Being the reason that a happy couple calls off a wedding is a position no one wants to be in. Nevertheless, Conrad followed Belly to Paris, where she tried to escape reality, and wound up with her forever. Does booking a plane ticket automatically secure Belly’s love? It seems like it might. Even though Belly ended up with Conrad, it doesn’t mean that Jere isn’t more of a gentleman, or the brother that deserves her love. It just means that Jenny Han must have made a typo when she wrote that Belly ends up with Conrad!
Counterpoint
Team Conrad, we did it!!!! Ever since season one, it was always Belly and Conrad who were destined to be endgame. I mean… the evidence is literally everywhere! In the first season, they shared conversations by the pool at night, Conrad rescued Belly at the deb ball when Jeremiah bailed, and he also gave Belly the infinity necklace. That necklace not only signified his eternal love, but also that he truly cared about her with all the love he poured into that gift.
In Season 2, they finally dated, made core memories, had their Christmas weekend in Cousins… and yes, prom was messy, but Conrad was still there for all of Belly’s milestones. He really does show up at the exact right moments. What can I say? He has impeccable timing.
Season 3, however, was a rough one to watch. It was filled with ups and downs, and flashbacks including little Belly and Conrad riding their bikes together. Even that small scene really proves that Conrad has had Belly’s back for years. He has always been there to help her. After so many episodes…Conrad finally confessed his love for Belly before the wedding, and he even flew to Paris to confess his love for a second time after she left! Buying a plane ticket to a country just to see Belly for what he thought would be an hour or two was an incredible showcase of his kindness, loyalty, and true love. As a result of his journey to Paris, after years of slow burns, hard work, and indecisiveness from Belly, our man can finally rest.
Or can he? Finally, what we’ve all been waiting for: We have a movie, folks! Here’s all you need to know:
